Vietnam, Thailand join hands to prevent drug trafficking

Monday, September 13, 2010.
The fifth Vietnam-Thailand conference on drug trafficking prevention was held in Ho Chi Minh City on September 6, with participation of senior officials from both drug prevention agencies.
The conference was attended by Major-General Cao Minh Nhan, deputy chief of Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security’s Social Crime Investigation Agency and General Krisna Polatana, Police General Krisna Polananta, Secretary-General of the Thai Office of the Narcotics Control Board.
The two countries focused on cooperation in drug prevention methodology and agreed to promote cooperation in four key issues: boosting information exchange, training, control of the cultivation of narcotics plants, and detoxification and rehabilitation.
Since Vietnam and Thailand signed a cooperation agreement on drug control in 2001, the two countries’ crime prevention agencies have broken many drug rings. However, according to authorities, the situation is getting worse. In 2009, the amount of heroin transported to Vietnam increased by 27 percent compared to a year earlier and 21,000 drug criminals were arrested.
Thailand also has to face the increasing trafficking of ATS, a new kind of harmful drug. The Thai government is now intensifying the second phase of a campaign to prevent drug trafficking in three regions, including Northern Thailand, Bangkok, and provinces near the southern border of the country.
